This letter was to Nelson’s prize agent and confidant, Alexander Davison. Notwithstanding Davison’s reassurance that her husband’s ardour for Emma would cool, Fanny forced Nelson to choose between them. Nelson’s new daughter, Horatia, may well have been the deciding factor in his decision to stay with Emma, but at the time it troubled his conscience severely. He agreed to give Fanny a generous financial settlement, providing she agreed never to see him again. She reluctantly accepted his terms but nevertheless remained devoted to him, and to his memory after his death, never allowing a bad word to be said against him. Shortly before she died in 1831, Fanny told her granddaughter, ‘When you are older, little Fan, you may know what it is to have a broken heart.’ On 26 April this year The 1805 Club acted as the catalyst for a series of events on the Wirral to celebrate Emmas’ birth and extraordinary life. Organised brilliantly by Winston Leese the Club’s visit witnessed the unveiling at Neston of the first monument to Emma in the UK and a birthday toast based on the simple epitaph reputed to have been written on the original plain wooden cross marking her grave in Calais – ‘Emma Hamilton: England’s friend’. While, we cannot be certain of the exact day of her birthday, Nelson always celebrated it on 26 April. Therefore, starting next year on this date, and every year in future, let us all raise a glass to this remarkable women and drink to, ‘Emma Hamilton: England’s friend’. With kind regards and best wishes to you all, Peter Warwick, Chairman FROM THE EDITOR I suspect on many occasions it has been said ‘there is no I in team’ this is true of the Club and is particularly apt when describing the production of The Kedge Anchor. Delivering three editions a year is practically continuous for its editors and the team behind it. Time sensitive items that give members up-to-date information are an important feature of any issue and this sometimes proves difficult to achieve within the timescale. An electronic newsletter has been introduced on the North American Station by Captain John Rodgaard USN rtd. John’s excellent ‘kindle’ version is embracing new skills in communication keeping the membership informed and involved. While this is one way forward, we see here a catalogue of Nelson and related objects of all depictions. Without Randy Mafit, The Kedge Anchor would lose much of its appeal, which clearly shows in his exceptionally produced notes: ‘From the Auction Rooms’. Picture quality and presentation is vital to achieve a newsletter/ magazine of value which, in itself, almost becomes a reference catalogue to be added to the bookshelves. It has always been challenging for the Club to embrace an international membership simply because of the communication needed. One of the ways to achieve this is here, in its magazine, where we have two fine articles, FREEDOM FRIGATE L’HERMIONE RETURNS TO AMERICA and the second, L’Hermione 2015 by North American member Joyce Ayres, which details the excitement caused by the ships visit. Considerably enhanced by the fine photographs of the standing rigging and sails which portray the stir caused by the visit. Your editors are actively seeking a member who is willing to join the editorial team. (They) will have control of all aspects of its production, content and layout, while under guidance from myself and Randy Mafit, who remain within the team. Distance and country are not important with the wonders of email and the web. The newsletter has become a huge part of the Club’s publications, if you feel you are able to help and are interested in furthering its development, please contact myself or Consulting Editor Randy Mafi t.
