of 6 June 2023 The 1805 Dispatches #23.03 THE 1805 DISPATCHES THE VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE From The Chairman, Capt. John Rodgaard USN (Ret) Hello from San Diego! I am sending greetings from the Maritime Museum of San Diego, where I am attending the North American Society of Oceanic History’s annual conference. As a member of the society, I had the honour to chair one of the panels. The theme for this year’s conference is Placing the Pacific in the North American Imagination. To my delight, there are papers whose topics fit within our Club’s area of interest — the Georgian Maritime Era. Many of you, especially our California members, are aware that the museum itself is completely afloat. One of the ‘exhibits’ is a replica of a Royal Navy Sixth Rate Frigate — HMS Surprise (24). This is a nondescript image of a wall mural, found at https://www.photowall.co.uk/sailing-ship-1wallpaper A very brief newsletter this time, but whilst quantity may have been reduced, it is hoped you will agree that quality has been maintained. With the AGM just a couple of weeks away, your Editor is getting excited about this next rare opportunity to meet fellow Club members, coupled with the even rarer opportunity to attend an important function at the Cornwallis Plaque installation on the previous day. This is the Club’s newsletter, as you know, but it is also a vehicle for members to tell us about themselves and their activities in a less formal way than in The Kedge Anchor. But that means you, the reader, are required to provide the stuff for other members to read. Yes, YOU! EDITORIAL Newsletter of The 1805 Club (Continued on next page)

of 6 June 2023 The 1805 Dispatches #23.03 Yes, she is the same ship that was the centrepiece for the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. It was a thrill to sit in the great cabin. During my time in The Golden State, I had the opportunity to meet up with three of our US members, namely Dr. David Warburton, OBE and Mr. Ian J. Skone-Rees, MBE at the British Unified Service Club of Los Angeles Coronation Dinner. It was so good seeing them again. Back in San Diego, was where I met up with member Christine Greenstein. Christine will be travelling back to Blighty for the summer and we will be seeing her at The Club’s AGM. The San Diego skyline at night is very impressive. Speaking of the AGM, I do hope to see many of you at Portsmouth. The AGM is just one of the events that The Club will hold in Portsmouth in June. On Friday 16 June, The Club will join the Milford-on-Sea Historic Records Society in the unveiling of a memorial stone commemorating Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. That will be followed by a semi-formal dinner at the Royal Maritime Club. Do look for the announcement and the link to sign up in this edition. Looking at the Events Diary, it reminded me that your Club will have a significant presence at the US Naval Academy’s McMullen Naval History Symposium in September. Thanks to fellow member, Dr. Evan Wilson of the US Naval War College, The Club will be sponsoring two three-person panels. So, there is much to look forward to as we sail through the remaining months of 2023. You will also note in this edition there will be two key Council vacancies opening up. After many years of service, Vice Chairman Geraint Day and The Club’s secretary Stephen Howarth will be stepping down. There are two wonderful opportunities for members to take an active role in The Club’s management. Hoping you are all well and cheerful, (Continued from page one)

of 6 June 2023 The 1805 Dispatches #23.03 Remember that there is a whole treasure trove here https://www.facebook.com/ The1805Club/ SHIP’S WORD WHEEL Take a ten-minute break and find as many words as possible, using the letters in the wheel. Each must use the hub letter and at least 3 others, used only once. No plurals (if only made by adding an ‘s’ or ‘es’), no foreign words not in common usage in English, nor proper nouns. There is at least one nine-letter word to be found. 25 = Average; 40 = Good; 50 = Amazing! Answers on last page For anyone who has been asleep, or for anyone new to this newsletter. The weekend of Friday 16 June and Saturday 17 June is very special to The 1805 Club, the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society, the City of Portsmouth and the nation. Here is a link to the reminder and application form sent to all Club members: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeueRn9dHtLOAqwtjvza29DP5QLbbompx2EhBBf4d5rfOpdw/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1&flr=0 After many years as valued members of The 1805 Club, serving in a variety of administrative roles, two Council members have independently decided that they want to try enjoying Club membership without the responsibility of office, for a while. ‘For a while’ is used because it is suspected that they both may find they miss the hurlyburly and seek to take on a role again in the future – but this is only the Editor’s opinion. Geraint Day is currently Vice Chair and Stephen Howarth is currently Secretary of The 1805 Club, and neither are standing for re-election at this year’s AGM on 17 June. Consequently, Members of the Club will be circulated with full details of the job descriptions and a request that they put themselves forward for election at the AGM. Not long to think about it, and anyone who has no idea what the jobs would involve are advised: Don’t Even Think About It! Despite the above flippant remark, this is a rare opportunity for someone to take on these serious undertakings, which can be very rewarding for anyone who shares the interests and aims of the Club. But it is necessary that anybody offering to take on either role should have the time and energy to carry them out. It is hoped that it will prove unnecessary to such hold elections often. It is required that office holders will present themselves for re-election each year. Holders of both offices will also be a trustee of the Club in its Charitable Incorporated Organ-isation (CIO) status. The roles are unremunerated (as are all trustee positions per se) and do not feel georaphically challenged, as all Council Meetings and most Committee Meetings are held on Zoom, unless face-toface is convenient and preferable. As an indication of the principal duties (which will be circulated in full soon, by the Membership Secretary), an edited brief summary follows: Vice Chair of The 1805 Club The Vice Chair is required to attend Council meetings and deputise for the Chairman, and to attend some committee meetings, respond to enquiries about the Club and generally be a senior representative of the Club as the opportunities arise. To provide details for the Annual Report to the Charity Commission of England and Wales, and to the AGM. Secretary of The 1805 Club (This is probably the senior administrative role on Club Council (the current Chairman calls the Secretary his Chief of Staff)). The Secretary is required to organise the calendar of two-monthly Council meetings and attend them, when he/she will assist the Chair in keeping the meeting on track, take minutes, perhaps with an assistant recorder, and circulate the minutes. To organise the AGM, including booking the venue, and to work with the Events Committee and help them to book venues/events, etc. To hold official Club stationery and Club documents, including digital material, and to coordinate with the Club archivist. To provide details for the Annual Report to the Charity Commission of Engalnd and Wales and to the AGM. Generally the Secretary will liaise between Council and Club stakeholders (President, VPs, etc.) and external bodies related to Club activities. JOB VACANCIES

of 6 June 2023 The 1805 Dispatches #23.03 CORNWALLIS REMEMBERED Culmination of a Remembrance Decade Members of The 1805 Club will all have had the official reminder from Sue Carr (Hon. Membership Secretary) about the forthcoming two-days event at HMNB Portsmouth, on the 16th and 17th of June – just a couple of weeks away. As The 1805 Dispatches is available to anyone who has interest enough to look for it on our website, this repeat of earlier information about the Cornwallis Commemoration is primarily aimed at non-members. It is now ten years since The 1805 Club commenced finding precisely where in Milford on Sea Admiral Sir William Cornwallis was buried. So, 2023 is the year in which we close off what was started a decade ago. St. Ann’s Church, Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, is the venue on 16 June for the unveiling of a remembrance stone to the Admiral. Additionally, the 2nd Sea Lord has given permission for the Club to use the nextdoor magnificent eighteenth-century Admiralty House and its lawn and gardens for refreshments after the service and unveiling. Don’t miss this prestigious event, closing off a decade of concentrated Club activity. Included in that decade has been: • much investigative work carried out by The 1805 Club supporting the Milford on Sea Historical Record Society (MOSHRS) to identify precisely where Sir William was buried within All Saints Church, Milford on Sea; • the work to restore the ledger marking the Admiral • the summer-long series of events in and around Milford-on-Sea in 2019. The Club, in partnership throughout the decade with MOSHRS, will hold a Remembrance Service and Unveiling of a Memorial Stone to the Admiral. St Ann’s Church is within the secure boundary of HM Dockyard as is neighbouring Admiralty House. It is a remarkable church in which Cornwallis and his con-temporaries would have worshipped. The Chaplain of the Fleet, The Venerable Andrew Hillier, along with the Dean of Portsmouth, The Right Reverend Dr Jonathan Frost, the vicar of St Ann’s, Rev Phill Amey and the Club’s own Chaplain, Rev Lynda Sebbage will be leading the Remembrance Service. There will be a choir and organist and a full Order of Service. After the church service, those in attendance will witness Nigel Atkinson Esq., Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire unveil the remembrance stone to Sir William. Also attending will be some very senior naval officers, the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, two local Members of Parliament (Penny Mordaunt and Stephen Morgan) and a dozen Portsmouth Sea Cadets to form an honour guard for the Lord-Lieutenant. Set in consecrated ground at the entrance to St Ann’s, the remembrance stone has been commissioned jointly between The 1805 Club and MOSHRS. Following the unveiling, we are priviledged to be invited to use the 2nd Sea Lord’s Admiralty House gardens (next door to St Ann’s Church) for buffet refreshments. This occasion promises to be a wonderful event, culminating a decade-long’s activity by the Club with MOSHRS to remember the admiral. Full details will be promulgated to members. Stephen Tregidgo Club Lead on Cornwallis Remembrance Stone Above: William Cornwallis as Admiral By Daniel Gardner (1750-1805). 5 of 6 June 2023 The 1805 Dispatches #23.03 Trafalgar Way Talks We continue to offer free talks telling The Trafalgar Way Story within reasonable travelling distance of Salisbury, UK. Our former Director of The Trafalgar Way, Kathy Brown, volunteers to give lively illustrated talks to any interested audience – in exchange for a donation to The 1805 Club, a contribution to travel expenses if possible, and the opportunity to fundraise by selling Club publications on the night. On May 18th 2023 Frome Royal Naval Association hosted one of these talks, arranged by their branch chairman, 1805 Club member Nick Reader. The audience included several local residents who had seen publicity about the event, and it therefore served as a good recruitment opportunity both for the RNA and The 1805 Club! From funds raised via voluntary entrance fees and the raffle, the talk generated £46.10 for The 1805 Club, plus an additional £135 from sales of The Official Storymap of The Trafalgar Way. You can purchase this fascinating and informative document online via The 1805 Club Shop (www.1805club/org/shop) or The Trafalgar Way website (www.thetrafalgarway.org). It makes a great gift for history lovers! Forthcoming talks: Blandford Forum Museum - November 2023 The next date currently scheduled for a talk about the Trafalgar Way is November 24th 2023. Location: Blandford Forum Museum, Blandford, Dorset, UK This event will be ticketed - £5 for Museum and 1805 Club members, £8 to members of the public. We are also discussing with the Museum the possibility of having a permanent exhibit about The Trafalgar Way, since it passes directly through the historic Dorset town! A missing plaque Are you considering a plaque-to-plaque journey along the route of The Trafalgar Way (see www. thetrafalgarway.org/the-trafalgar-way-map)? Please be aware that the plaque at The Salutation Inn, Hammersmith is currently missing. The 1805 Club are in discussions with pub company, Fuller's, to fund a replacement - we could recommend you 'watch this space' but staring at a blank piece of wall could be a little dull! We're hoping to site the replacement plaque in a new location outside the building this time - however this may not be possible due to the decorative nature of the pub's exterior. More news to follow when we have it. The Salts and their Pickle Tour, November 2023 Save the dates! We are delighted to announce that fantastic folk and shanty band The Salts (https://www. thesalts.co.uk/) will be performing a series of gigs along The Trafalgar Way this autumn. The performances will be held at Falmouth, Exeter, Blandford and London from 3rd to 6th November - proper 'Pickle Season'. More details will be announced soon, along with links for purchasing tickets. In addition to the four gigs, one each evening, the Band will be stopping off at many of The Trafalgar Way plaques and playing in public to attract donations for The 1805 Club and Jubilee Sailing Trust. This promises to be an amazing bit of publicity for all three parties as well as raising valuable funds to help us in our campaigns and projects. Your support in attending the gigs and public appearances, as well as helping publicise them in locations along The Trafalgar Way will be much appreciated in due course! NEVER FORGET THE TRAFALGAR WAY!

NAVAL TERMS THAT HAVE ‘COME ASHORE’ The Devil To Pay The full phrase is ‘The Devil to pay and no pitch hot’ - Seamen's slang for an unsolvable dilemma. This is from the Devil being the name given to the outermost deck seam, which had to be payed by sealing it with pitch but which was the most difficult seam to get at and of a very awkward shape. ‘Between the Devil and the deep blue sea’ derives from referring to the same Devil.
