Description: A marble wall plaque, with a left profile of Codrington surmounted by a naval crown, with flags and the word ‘Navarin’. Below is an embossed coat of arms of Codrington.

Sculptor: Albert Bruce Joy (it is believed that Joy is responsible only for the portrait profile of Codrington)

Transcription

in memory of

ADMIRAL SIR EDWARD CODRINGTON, G.C.B.,

born 27th of april 1770, died 28th of april 1851.

he entered the navy 1783; was lieutenant of h.m.s. ‘queen charlotte’

in the battle of the 1st of june 1794;

commander in the action of the 23rd june 1795;

captain of h.m.s. ‘orion’ in the battle of trafalgar 21st october 1805;

captain of h.m.s. ‘blake’ in the scheldt, and on the east coast of spain 1809–13;

served on the coast of n. america 1814.

he was commander-in-chief of the allied fleets of england, france, and russia,

in the battle of navarin, 20th october 1827.
